These Variations—a manuscript copy of which is preserved at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, Germany—use the B-flat clarinet and the guitar tuned to the third fret, the latter relegated to a mere accompaniment role.
The composition opens with an expressive introductory Adagio.
This is followed by the exposition of a delightful theme, which is then developed into five subsequent variations, some of which are particularly technically challenging for the clarinet.
